When I was growing up, This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti was topping the charts. Everyone had a copy, and everyone was talking about it. The title for this novel was taken from our text for this week, Ephesians 6:12:

There is plenty to critique in this book, from both literary and theological standpoints (and I don’t recommend it). For one thing, it deals heavily in fear, horror, and dualism. Still, I can resonate with the curiosity I imagine inspired the author. What does Paul mean, exactly? What is going on “in the heavenly realms” that we cannot see?

However, Paul’s emphasis is most certainly not fear-mongering. As we have seen time and again this week, his letter powerfully and beautifully declares the truth of God: His unconquerable love, mercy, peace, grace, adoption, power, and invitation to those who believe. Even in extreme suffering, Paul sees no need to be discouraged, for what God is doing in Christ is just that powerfully amazing and unstoppable. What then is pain? What then is death?

I’m not able to outline for you today the various cosmic powers and forces of evil that wrestle with us in this present darkness, but I do wonder if our current Christian obsession with fear is, itself, one of them. What are we feeding our minds? Do we speak of our troubles as Paul does, full of hope and exuberance at God’s triumph, seen even now in our midst? Backyard wrestling torrent.

What if our eyes were focused on God’s incomparably great mercy, His love that surpasses knowledge, the power that brought Jesus back from the dead and is now living in us through the Spirit?
